Coming Home to My Body: Why Learning Reiki Changed Everything for Me (And Why It Might for You Too)

Hey, Radiant Soul!

There was a time not so long ago when I didn’t feel safe in my own body—emotionally, physically, or spiritually. I was managing a bunch of chronic illnesses, carrying anxiety like a backpack I couldn’t take off, and pushing through life in survival mode.

I looked like I had it all together. But I wasn’t at peace.

Somewhere along the way, I learned to see my body as something to fix or control, not something I could trust. And I know I’m not alone in that. So many of us, especially women, have been taught that strength means pushing through, no matter what.

But real healing doesn’t ask us to push harder.

It asks us to come home.

For me, Reiki was the doorway.

The Moment I Realized I Wasn’t “Fine”

I didn’t have words for it at the time, but I was living with high-functioning anxiety for years. I was always on, always taking care of everything and everyone. On the outside, I looked like I was thriving. On the inside, I couldn’t rest. My jaw was clenched all the time. My thoughts never slowed down.

It all came to a head when I was stuck in a stressful work environment. My body was sending me signals, but I wasn’t listening. I’d been taught to keep going no matter what. And I was good at it—until I wasn’t.

Dr. Judith Joseph describes it perfectly: “People with high-functioning anxiety often look calm and successful on the outside while struggling with worry and perfectionism on the inside. They’re always waiting for something to go wrong, even when everything seems fine.”

That was me. I’ve learned that anxiety doesn’t always look messy. Sometimes it looks like being helpful, reliable, and on top of everything—until it doesn’t.

Finding Reiki for Anxiety and Healing

When I first tried Reiki, I didn’t totally get what it was. But I was desperate for something that didn’t feel like more work. I didn’t want another thing to fix myself. I wanted to feel safe.

I remember lying down during that first session, and for the first time in ages, I didn’t feel like I had to hold it all together. My body softened. My breath got deeper. I felt this quiet relief, like my body was saying, “Finally. Thank you.”

It wasn’t some big moment. It was gentle and real.

Reiki didn’t “fix” me. It just helped me feel safe enough to reconnect with myself.

And that changed everything.

What Reiki Gave Me

Reiki became my daily anchor—a reminder that peace wasn’t something I had to earn. It was already there, waiting for me.

It gave me a way to soothe myself without needing external validation. A way to sit with my body, even on the hard days. A way to bring warmth to the parts of me that felt frozen from stress and pain.

It also helped me notice the patterns. I could see when my anxiety flared up—the tight chest, the racing thoughts, the urge to do more. Instead of reacting, I could pause. Breathe. Put my hands on my heart.

And remind myself, “I am here. We got this. You will be okay.”

Even now, when anxiety comes back—because it still does—I go back to that. I’ll activate Reiki with my hands and use some of the symbols I’ve learned to bring calm and balance. My body starts to soften again.

The anxiety doesn’t disappear. But it doesn’t run the show anymore. Reiki helps it mellow. It reminds me that I’m not broken. I’m just human. And I don’t need to punish myself for trying to stay safe.

Living with Chronic Illness and Finding Ease

I also live with chronic illnesses. Reiki hasn’t erased any of that. However, it has helped me find a more compassionate way to navigate it.

Instead of pushing through or shutting down, I can pause. Feel what’s there—grief, frustration, tenderness. And then meet it with healing energy—not just mine, but the universal energy that flows through all of us.

That’s why I share Reiki—not because it’s a quick fix, but because it’s a gentle, powerful tool to come back home to yourself. A soft place to land when everything else feels too much.

Because healing isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being real—and being kind to ourselves along the way.

Collective Healing Through Reiki Practice

Let’s be real—there is so much going on in the world right now. The collective grief. The climate anxiety. The heartbreak. The exhaustion. The systemic injustices. The pressure to keep going, even when everything in your soul is whispering, rest.

And so many of us are holding it all—our own lives, our families, our communities—and wondering how we’re supposed to keep showing up when we’re running on empty.

But here’s what I’ve learned:

We don’t have to do it alone. We’re not meant to.

Reiki isn’t just about personal healing. It’s about collective healing. About remembering that we’re connected. About cultivating presence so we can respond to life—not just react to it.

When you heal, even a little, you change the way you show up. You interrupt cycles. You ripple that energy into every conversation, every room, every relationship. And that’s how healing spreads—not by force, but by resonance.
