What Is Reiki and How It Can Help With Burnout

You have probably heard the word "Reiki" before. Maybe a friend mentioned it, maybe you stumbled across it while falling down a wellness rabbit hole at 11 pm because you could not sleep again. And maybe you thought, okay, but what even is it? And does it actually work?
I am so glad you are here, because I want to break this down in a way that actually makes sense, especially if you are someone who is burned out and quietly wondering if there is something, anything, that can help you feel like yourself again.
Let's start at the beginning.
So, What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a form of energy healing that originated in Japan in the early 1900s. The word itself comes from two Japanese words: "rei," meaning universal or spiritual wisdom, and "ki," meaning life force energy. Together they point to something that healers and wisdom traditions across cultures have known for centuries, that the body holds energy, and when that energy becomes blocked, stuck, or depleted, we feel it.
Physically. Emotionally. Mentally.
During a Reiki session, a trained practitioner uses light touch or hands placed just above the body to help channel energy and support the body's natural ability to restore balance. It is gentle. It is non-invasive. And it works with your body, not against it.
You do not have to believe in anything specific for Reiki to work. You just have to show up and let yourself receive.
What Does Burnout Actually Do to Your Body?
Before we talk about how Reiki helps with burnout, I want to make sure we are on the same page about what burnout actually is, because it is so much more than just being tired.
Burnout is what happens when you have been running on empty for so long that your nervous system gets stuck in a chronic stress response. Your cortisol stays elevated. Your body stays in fight-or-flight. And over time, that wears down everything: your immune system, your sleep, your digestion, your ability to feel joy, your motivation, and yes, even your capacity to imagine a different future for yourself.
Burnout shows up as exhaustion that sleep does not fix. It shows up as cynicism, numbness, and that foggy, disconnected feeling where you are going through the motions but not really present. It shows up as a body that feels heavy and a mind that will not quiet down.
This is not laziness. This is not a weakness. This is a dysregulated nervous system that has been asked to hold too much for too long, and it needs support.
How Reiki Helps With Burnout Recovery
Here is where the two meet, and this is the part I want you to really take in.
Reiki works directly with your nervous system. When you are in a session, your body is given permission to shift out of that chronic stress response and into the parasympathetic state, which we sometimes call rest and digest, or rest and receive. This is the state where your body can actually heal. Where inflammation can settle. Where your mind can slow down enough to access clarity.
Most of us who are burned out are so used to pushing through that we have forgotten what it feels like to truly rest. A Reiki session creates a container for that. Not willpower rest. Not "I should probably take a bath" rest. Deep, cellular, this-is-what-my-body-has-been-waiting-for rest.
Here is what people often experience during and after Reiki sessions for burnout:
A release of physical tension they did not even realize they were holding.
A sense of calm that stays with them, not just for the hour but for days afterward.
Emotions that have been stuffed down finally have space to move through.
Sleep that is actually restful.
A reconnection to their own intuition and inner knowing.
And over time, with consistent Reiki healing for burnout, something bigger starts to shift. The constant sense of dread starts to lift. The decisions that felt impossible start to feel clearer. Women begin to feel like themselves again.
Reiki Addresses What Burnout Recovery Plans Usually Miss
Most burnout recovery advice is practical. Set better boundaries. Take more breaks. Exercise. Eat well. And those things matter, they really do. But if your nervous system is still stuck in survival mode, even the best habits will not fully land.
You cannot think or willpower your way out of burnout. It lives in your body, and it needs to be addressed at that level.
This is exactly why I pair Reiki with career and life coaching in my practice. The Reiki does the body-level work, creating safety in your nervous system so you can access your clarity. The coaching does the strategy-level work, helping you figure out what you actually want and how to move toward it. Together, they address burnout at the root, not just the surface.
What to Expect in a Reiki Session for Burnout
I want you to walk in knowing exactly what to expect so your nervous system can relax before you even get on the table. Here is what a session at Reiking Sunshine actually looks like.
You will arrive, get comfortable, and we will have a short conversation about what you have been experiencing and what you are hoping to feel. Then you will lie down fully clothed on a table, close your eyes, and simply receive. I will work through a series of hand positions on or just above your body, following the energy to wherever it most needs to flow.
Sessions typically last about an hour. Most people feel deeply relaxed within the first few minutes, and many experience warmth, tingling, or visual imagery during the session. Some people feel emotional, and that is completely welcome. Whatever comes up is exactly what was ready to be released.
After your session, you will receive guidance on how to support your body as it continues to integrate the healing process. Reiki keeps working after the session ends.
How Often Should You Receive Reiki for Burnout?
This depends on where you are and what your body needs, and I always personalize this. That said, if you are in the thick of burnout, I generally recommend starting with a series of sessions closer together, maybe once a week or every two weeks, and then spacing out as you start to feel more regulated.
Think of it like physical therapy for your nervous system. One session can shift a lot. A consistent practice creates lasting change.
You Do Not Have to Keep Pushing Through
Here is what I want you to hear, maybe for the first time today: you do not have to earn your healing. You do not have to hit rock bottom before you are allowed to ask for support. And you do not have to figure this out alone.
Burnout is not a sign that you failed. It is a sign that you have been pouring out so much for so long that your body is ready for something to pour back in.
Reiki for burnout is one of the most powerful ways I know to start that process. To give your nervous system the signal that it is safe. To help your body remember what it feels like to rest. And to create the internal space where healing, clarity, and a new direction can finally begin to emerge.
