For a long time, I didn’t understand why I felt distant from my own body.
I chalked it up to chronic illness or fatigue, but the truth reached deeper. Many Women of Color know what it means to move through the world with expectations of strength, silence, and endurance woven into our daily lives. These patterns shape how we relate to our bodies, often leaving us disconnected, cautious, or unsure of what we’re feeling.
Living with chronic illness only adds another layer. The unpredictability, the explanations we’re asked to give, and the ways our experiences are often dismissed create a kind of internal distancing that feels protective but eventually becomes limiting.
Through somatic awareness, grounding practices, and connection with the stories and wisdom of those who came before us, we can begin to restore a relationship with the body that feels honest and grounded. While this conversation centers on the experiences of Women of Color, the reflections and practices can support any woman navigating chronic illness who is seeking a more connected way of being with herself.
